Basics of Photoshop - Youtube by PeteMohrbacher Basics of Photoshop - Youtube by PeteMohrbacher

This is a basic overview of my painting process in Photoshop. It's not impressive looking, but it encompasses the majority of my workflow in just a few minutes.

When I say majority, I mean that what I show in this video covers about 95% of my entire time using the program.

You sir, is a lifesaver. I have struggled for MONTHS on what brush settings to use. This tutorial finally put to an end to my question. I can't thank you enough.

I am still working on this piece but this has been rendered/shaded with the 60-40 opacity-flow all throughout so far. I barely need to change settings ..if any at all

I watched and saved your other tutorials as well. Can't wait to try them once I am in the coloring/final touches :)

Hey would like to say that I like how your website came out. The tutorials are awesome, dig the over all layout.
I have a ? the one on how to delete the white from a sketch. When i got to hold or hit backspace for fill, it didn't darken the sketch. Maybe soomthing isn't right with my photoshop CS3. Let me know if ya know whats up, Thanks for your help broha....
kissafish Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2009
How did you erase the white in the sketch?

I really love your tutorials. You're straightforward, fun to listen to and point out the inner workings of photoshop that I've so far overlooked. I'd -love- to see more of your tutorials.

Aside from a few minor differences, that is about the same as me!

My personal preference is to use "lock transparent pixels" on the base color layer, then work out all the basic shading, then finish out the rendering on a layer up top like you do.

I also have a couple custom brushes I use... I prefer to set the "spacing" on my brush to 10% rather than the default 'cuz the numerous circles you're gettin' bug me, more often than not, heh. And I like to have pressure sensitivity on flow and/or opacity. :)
PeteMohrbacher Featured By Owner Apr 17, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Most people use the opacity/flow sensitivity. I don't know why I taught myself to use the size sensitivity instead, but it works for me.

I have avoided any methods that lock down the silhouette of the figure because I like to shave into it or build it out in places. I think the reason I have an easy time doing this is because of the size brush, I can get small details around edges without going outside the figure.

I know a lot of artists have a similar workflow, but I want something public to help illuminate the process for people who have less experience.
poojipoo Featured By Owner Apr 18, 2008  Professional Filmographer
I actually have size sensitivity turned on, too! :) I like to start out my shading with brushes that are kinda absurdly huge is part of the reason why I like to lock the base color. :P

But yeah, I think the tutorial's super helpful for plenty of people, don't get me wrong at all. I was just stating the mild differences in workflow for nothing more than conversation. :P
